Introduction
A. This account is found in the
four-fold gospels to emphasize its importance.
1. The year was 33 AD, last week of the
earthly of Jesus before the Feast of the Passover or the Unleavened Bread.
2. His entry had no motorcades, no fun
fare like those of celebrities or of political aspirants.
3. Let us learn the truth about Jesus' entry
to Jerusalem as He Himself said in John 8:32
B. Let us analyze this event which was
recorded in the four gospels.
1. Pre-Entrance to Jerusalem as to time
and occasion
2. Fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 in
Jesus' time
3. Lessons to learn and apply as His
present disciples
Discussion
A. Pre- entrance to Jerusalem despite
threats to His life (Matthew 20:19)
1. Reaching Bethphage/ Bethany at the
southeastern part of Mount of Olives, scene of His future ascension, Acts 1:9
2. Jesus' omniscience was revealed,
please compare with John 1:43-51, a sort of " mental telepathy."
3. The colt was not yet ridden by
anyone signifying " purity and innocence"
4. Conquerors would usually ride on big
horses to showcase their victories
5. His statement " The Lord needs
them," suggests Jesus as sovereign Lord
B. Fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 in
Jesus' triumphal entry
1. Prophecies have double meanings/
fulfillment (prophet’s time and Jesus' time)
2. " Daughters of Zion" refer
to the Jewish nation; Zion or Jerusalem takes on " feminine form,"
hence " mother"
3. Instruction to the two disciples was
followed and Jesus sat on the colt covered with the disciples' robes
4. There was no motorcade, no funfare
like the accolade given to celebrities and politicians
5. There were crowds who spread their
robes/ cloaks on the road; others used palm branches " to herald the
King!"
6. This was their version of " red
carpet" treatment to Jesus, a sort of " cordon sanitaire!"
7. Some of the crowds were there because
of the Feast of the Passover and because they witnessed the " raising of
Lazarus in Bethany," John 12:18
8. The Jewish leaders reacted
differently and exclaimed " the world has gone after Him," John 12:19
C. Lessons to learn and apply as His present
disciples
1. Their " hossana" (save
now) praises emphasize Christ as the Son of David and His coming in God's
authority, John 12:2
2. Different people had varied
reactions on Jesus' triumphal entry
a. There was great excitement
from the ordinary people
b. But the Jewish religious
leaders were alarmed for this Galilean prophet could become the "
leader" of possible revolt against Rome
3.But Jesus' entry into Jerusalem
proved His Messiahship and deity
a. The Holy Spirit guided the crowd to
acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah
b. But they thought of Jesus as a
physical King who would lead them against Rome
c.His miracles had "
charismatic" effects on the populace
d.But the same crowd, a week later,
shouted, at the instigation of their religious leaders, " away with Him,
crucify Him!"
4. Why was this entry to Jerusalem
triumphant?
a. A triumph of humility over pride and
worldly grandeur
b. A triumph of poverty over affluence/
wealth
c. A triumph of meekness and gentleness
over rage and malice
5. The spreading of the garments/ palm
branches along the way shows " recognition of greatness, pledge of loyalty
and a promise of support," cf.Jehu at 2 Kings 9:13
Conclusion
A. Summarize of the Main Points

present disciples
