Approaching God

“Approaching God”

(Hebrews 10:19-25)


I. Introduction:

1) In the Old Testament, only the High Priest can enter the Holy of Holies.

2) That was changed in the New Testament when Jesus Christ became the High Priest over the House of God.

3) Our key verse (verse 22) tells us the “how’s” and “why’s” we will approach God.


II. The “How’s” in approaching God:

1) God wants us to come near Him.

a. To come closer; to come forward

b. Hebrews 4:16; James 4:8

2) God wants us to approach Him sincerely.

a. real, genuine, true inside and out

b. Why? Because being real, genuine and sincere emphasizes authentic unity.

c. Luke 6:46; Matthew 7:21

3) God wants us to approach Him wholeheartedly.

a. Our heart reveals our true character, inner self, thoughts, feelings

1. it is the center of our being and morality

b. Our heart is the center and seat of our spiritual life, as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes, endeavors"

c. 1 Samuel 16:7

4) God wants us to approach Him with confidence.

a. conviction; wholehearted confidence

b. It derives from a reliance upon God and His promises and results in boldness and steadfastness in service and in the face of difficulties.

c. 2 Corinthians 5:7-8


III. The “Why’s” in approaching God:

1) to seek His grace and favor

a. Hebrews 7:25; 11:6

2) to ask the counsel of God

a. 1 Samuel 14:36

3) to attach oneself to Christ

a. 1 Timothy 6:3; John 14:6


IV. Conclusion:

1. Let us keep on drawing near to God.

2. Let us not stop in approaching Him.

3. Let us always come near Him.
