Christian World Ministry "..the churches of Christ salute you" Romans 16:16
Colossians (1:9-14)
IT'S A BLESSING TO BE A CHRISTIAN, ISN'T IT?
In his epistles, Apostle never fails to give encouragement and comfort citing testimonies of faithful Christians. Moreover, he provides us with precious knowledge with practical applications in our daily lives.
In his opening exhortation, Paul commended the Colossians for their faith in Christ Jesus and of their love for all the saints; reminding them of their hope stored in heaven since they heard the truth of the gospel. Their behavior inspired by their love in the Spirit overflowed with fruit among them. (Col 1:3-8)
As Paul continued with his encouragement, he expressed their joy and unceasing prayer that they will be filled with the knowledgeable of God's will, in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. (Col 1:9)
Paul is practically saying that, “Now that you are a Christian, you are ready to be filled with the knowledge of God's will.”
When we obeyed the Gospel, we have undergone a "washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit" – Tit 3:4-5
The blessings enjoyed in Christ include not only our redemption, but also our renewal in the Spirit. As we are renewed, we can now:
walk in the newness of life. (Romans 6:4)
a new creation. ( 2 Cor 5:17)
approach God in prayer. (Eph 2:18)
know the mystery of His will. (Eph 1:9).
we gain Wisdom. (James 1:5)
gain Spiritual understanding. (1 Cor 2:12)
And as spiritual people, we can then enjoy A Walk Worthy of the Lord. Being worthy of his great sacrifice. Apostle Paul commands 5 things that we need to do continually as we go proceed to verse 10a/
MAIN
DISCUSSION:
I – CONTINUE TO FULLY PLEASE HIM (Col 10a)
10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him,
There is a conduct which displeases God – Romans 8:8
We please God by obeying His commands – 1 John 3:22
Obeying His commandments with Love. - John 14:15
II – BEING FRUITFUL IN EVERY GOOD WORK (Col 1:10b)
being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
We should be eager, zealous for good work. - Tit 2:14
For this we have been "created in Christ Jesus" - Eph 2:10
Why? So that God may be glorified - John 15:8
III – INCREASING IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD – Col 10c
and increasing in the knowledge of God;
How can one truly know God?
Through His creation.( Psalms 19:1)
Through the prophets.(Hebrews 1:1)
Through our Lord Jesus. (Jn 14:7-9)
IV – STRENGTHENED WITH ALL MIGHT Col 11a
11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power,
We need to be strengthened through the Spirit for the performance of our duty; to meet temptations; and to bear up under the various trials in life. (Eph 3:16)
It is God's desire that we be strong in our living for Him. ( 2Ti 1:7-8 )
We can do all things through strength from Christ. (Php 4:13)
V – WITH ALL PATIENCE AND LONG-SUFFERING, WITH JOY (Col 11b)
"for all PATIENCE and LONGSUFFERING with JOY"
Patience and long-suffering produced by the Holy Spirit. Gal 5:22-23
I.e., so that even as we experience trials in this life, we may do so
WITH JOY!
Many Christians complain that the commands of Jesus are difficult and tedious. This is not so.
If we we obey his commands as we are walking worthy of Him, it is not at all tedious! We obey him because we love him. And if we have this mindset, we obey him with JOY, isn't it?
CONCLUSION.
"GIVING THANKS TO THE FATHER" (Col 1:12-14)
giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.
The passage teaches us that we are partakers of the inheritance of the saints. .
Salvation is offered by God in Jesus Christ to everyone, but in this verse we see that we need to be QUALIFIED. There is a condition. We need to COMPLY with the WILL of God the obedience of the Gospel which is the DEATH, BURIAL, AND RESURRECTION of Jesus Christ.
13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
It is clear in this passage that as Christians, we were transported to his Kingdom, the Church. We are not waiting for a physical kingdom yet to come.
14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
We were redeemed from our sins as we are now a NEW CREATION, WALKING WORTHILY WITH THE LORD!
As we:
continue to please God
bear fruit of good works
obtain more knowledge about God
get strengthened in His might
exercise patience and long-suffering
with JOY.
