Demise of a Cebuano Preacher, Debater, Writer and School Director

February 12, 2023 marked the passing away of a great servant of Christ in Eastern Visayas.
Reuben S. Emperado of Negros Oriental, a graduate of Philippine Bible College, Baguio City in 1971, returned to His Maker at age 73.
He was married to the former Evelyn A. Oliva of Roxas City, also a graduate of PBC in Baguio City.
Their marriage brought several children into this world: Kenneth ( deceased) Gary, Michael, Neil, Phillip, Ruth Ann and Rachel.
Aside from managing Philippine Institute of Bible Studies ( PIBS ) in Mandaue City, Cebu, Reuben was also involved with radio ministry and wrote for Voice of Truth International magazine/booklet. He also debated with some denominational preachers between 1970's to 1990's.
Paul's words can aptly described Reuben S. Emperado as God's servant, " I have fought the good fight; I have finished my course. Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown in heaven."
God be praised for choosing Reuben S. Emperado as one of His indefatigable servants in Eastern Visayas mainly.
PBC alumna returns to her Maker
Loida Javier Sico- Almero returned to her Maker on August 23, 2022 at the Pagamutan ng Dasmariñas in the City of Dasmariñas, Cavite, 3 months before her 72nd birthday.
The late sister graduated from Philippine Bible College in Baguio City in the 1970's.
She is survived by her two sons Ken and Den, who are both active members of the Lord's church in San Jose, Dasmariñas City.
Owing to her degree in theology from PBC, Baguio City, sister Loida had contributed much to the growth and stability of the Lord's church in Dasmariñas City. She was active in all activities of the ladies in the church in various ways.
Her family, relatives, friends and all church members will surely miss her physical presence as she went to another level of existence. Many will not forget her kindness as a true Christian woman.
Former missionary and ZBC director returned to His maker
Robert Charles Sheppard, former missionary to Zamboanga Peninsula and director of Zamboanga Bible College, Zamboanga City from 1966-1968 returned to His Maker last October 20, 2022 at the age of 91.
Sheppard took over the Directorship of Zamboanga Bible College, after Rafael T.Aguilar became the Minister of Zamboanga Church of Christ, Zamboanga City at Moret Field Road in Baliwasan, a location about 2 kilometers from Zamboanga City airport.
Aside from having been a Director of ZBC, Sheppard also preached among the Subano natives of Zamboanga Del Sur accompanied by Filipino preachers like Daniel Oliva among others.
Even as he returned to the United States of America, Sheppard's heart was still with the Philippines- the reason he helped Roman G. Cariaga raise funds for the establishment of Sunrise Christian University beginning in the 1990's onwards in Butuan City in Agusan del Norte.
He also served as Minister and Elder in different congregations in Texas, USA. He also helped raise financial support for Edgardo Maquiling and this writer in their preaching and teaching activities for almost two decades.
He is survived by his wife Bunny and three children Greg, Bobby and Brenda. Truly, this man had done much for the Lord and His church both in the United States of America and in the Philippines.
" All things work together for good to them that love the Lord, to them who are the called according to His purpose," Romans 8:28 was Robert Charles Sheppard favorite passage.

Remembering Christina Natividad Ridad
My beloved wife
Virginia Jimenez Madlaing and I were blessed and fortunate to attend
the viewing and memorial services for Manang Christina NativIdad
Ridad last Saturday, July 9, 2022 at the Duggan’s Mortuary in Daly
City, California She died in her home last June 19, 2022 due to
ovarian cancer at the age of 91.
It was God’s providence
that Abe , owner of Abe Barber Shops located in Daly City and San
Francisco, called last Thursday evening and informed me of the death
of Manang Christina and the viewing on Saturday 4pm to 8pm at the
Duggan’s Mortuary. It was also God’s providence that brother
Terry Denis came with
us for the viewing and memorial services immediately after the
ACAPINOY (acapella singing of favorite gospel
songs and heavenly hymns in English, Spanish, Tagalog, Ilocano,
Pangasinan, Cebuano), the last segment of the global My Angel Radio
San Francis, every Saturday, 11am to 3pm.
I have been acquainted
with Manang Christina since the mid 80s, when I was still active
publisher of the weekly PHILIPPINE EXAMINER.
Manang Christina, who originally came from the province of Ilocos
Norte in the Philippines, like my 103-year-old mother, Elena
Sampayan Gabot
Madlaing, was then very active in the
community like her involvement in the Seniors Center. She coordinated
and organized the activities for the annual Independence
Day (June 12) and Friendship
Day (July 4) where she invited me as one of
the inspirational and guest speakers. Like myself, she had been
active as licensed Real Estate Broker until she retired.
I have lost contact with
her for several years until she called one evening last April and
requested me to visit and pray for her. The following day, I visited
her and prayed for her physical healing. During my succeeding visits
in her home in Plymouth Avenue, San Francisco, California, Manang
Christina shared her spiritual journey. She was very happy to know
that I am now an active Evangelist with the GOLDEN
GATE CHURCH OF CHRIST in San Francisco,
California. I gave her autographed copies of my two best-selling
books “HISTORICITY OF JESUS”
subtitled “Facts and Evidences for
Agnostics, Atheists, Believers and Christians,”
and “LIFESTYLE FOR LONGEVITY”
subtitled “How to be Healthy Emotionally,
Financially, Sexually and
Spiritually.” In my succeeding visit
(together with brother Terry Denis) Manang Christina surprised us
when we saw the autographed copies of the books “HISTORICITY
OF JESUS,” “LIFESTYLE
FOR LONGEVITY”, “JESUS
CHRIST” and the Christian
World Ministry Quarterly Journal
prominently displayed on the table in her
living room.
She told us that she
wanted her children, grandchildren and those who will be visiting her
to be able to read the books and the Christian magazine we gave her.
She even brought out the idea that we MUST display the books
“HISTORICITY OF JESUS”,
“LIFESTYLE FOR LONGEVITY”, “JESUS
CHRIST, ”Christian
World Ministry Quarterly Journal in the two
locations of ABE Barber Shop in Daly City and San Francisco,
California. Her idea inspired us to start the BOOKS
MINISTRY through Monthly GGCC Books Raffle
in cooperation with the ABE Barber Shop locations in Daly City and
San Francisco and the global My Angel Radio San Francisco.
Manang
Christina explained to us that her greatest longing and desire is
for her children, grandchildren, relatives and friends to know the
gospel (Death, Burial and Resurrection of Jesus) which is the power
of God to salvation (Romans 1:16) Through God’s providence, the
desire and longing of Manang Christina was answered when brother
Terry Denis shared the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4, 2 Thessalonians
1:7-9, Acts 2:37-38, Romans 6:3-4, Acts 22:16) in its purity and
simplicity during the viewing and memorial services last Saturday
evening.. The brief message of brother Terry Denis was heard by the
six children of Manang Christina namely: Francis Ridad, Michael
Ridad, Edward Ridad, Ruelle Ridad, Jesus Ridad, Ruelle Ridad, their
spouses, 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and friends.
Manang Christina
confided to brother Terry Denis that she
obeyed the gospel in baptism (Acts 2-38, Acts
22:16) in a river wayback in the Philippines.
I am glad that my beloved
wife Virginia Jimenez Madlaing
and I were able to sing “God ‘s
Family” during the
memorial services We were also able to sing together with brother
Terry Denis “Victory in Jesus.” To
support the gospel presentation of brother Terry Denis, I mentioned a
brief quote in the “HISTORICITY OF JESUS”
page 110, as follows: “The real tragedy is
not that we die with COVID-19 and other sickness. The real tragedy
is if we die without Jesus because we refuse to learn, understand and
obey the gospel in baptism for the forgiveness of sins
(Romans 1:16, 1 Corinthians 15:1-2, 2 Thessalonians 1-7-9, Acts
2:37-38, Acts 22:16); and fail to
remain faithful until death
(Revelation2:10)

Filpino Christians, returned to His Maker at age 91 after more than
50 years of laboring in God's vineyard in many places, particularly
in the Philippines.
Aside from having been an
evangelist, Bob Buchanan served as Director of Philippine Bible

He was an eloquent speaker, not
only in English, his native tongue but also in Ilocano, a dialect in
Northern Luzon and in many other parts of the country.

most loved American missionaries in the Philippines as he was
amiable, good natured and kind aside from many other admirable

Henry Dobbs, an active member of White's Ferry Road church in West
Monroe, Lousianna, USA last July 4 revealed that Kingston Kerkulah of

Tribute to a Fallen Church Leader
Just like a hero in the battlefield, Alfredo Sandoval Silva, 74, had
fallen physically last June 19, 2022.
Despite
medications and home care, brother Ed ( as he is fondly called) fell
asleep last June 19, 2022, after succumbing to a lingering illness.
Surviving
brother Ed are his wife Ellen and children Allen, Ryan and Maj Silva,
aside from his daughters- in- laws, grandchildren, relatives and
friends.
Brother
Ed, both a Sanitary Engineer and a Civil Engineer, served as Manager
of the Water District Dasmariñas City in Cavite for some
years.
In
the church of the Lord located at San Jose, Dasmariñas City, brother
Ed served various times as preacher, teacher and song leader. He was
an active church leader, generous and hospital
Owing
to his position in the Water District, he was able to help church
members find jobs there and in other places.
With
God's help, brother Ed would conduct bible studies among the Water
District's employees leading them to become disciples of Christ.
Although,
his physical body was interred in a Memorial Park at Dasmariñas
City, brother Ed's good works, humility and leadership in the church
and in the goverment, will forever remained in the hearts and minds
of all who truly admired and loved him.
Yes,
like a hero, he had fallen, but the good works he had done for all,
will never be forgotten. DAO

His father who hailed from Guinobatan,
Albay in the Bicol Region went to Manila after World War I to seek
for employment. Hence, George was born in Pasig in 1928.

Felix Rabina Garlitos- Tribute to a Preacher/Debater
The
new generation of Filipino Christians, the so called "millenials"
may only have heard of Felix R. Garlitos as
preacher in Mindanao and in Luzon areas.
Born
on April 23, 1936 before the Second World War ( WWII 1942-1946),
Felix Garlitos, as a young man, became a Christian through the
influence of his grandfather.
As
he grew older and developed spiritually, the likes of Laureano Belo
and Cornelio Alegre as pioneer preachers in Mindanao had inspired
Felix to become a gospel proclaimer.
Migrating
to the National Capital Region and living in Quezon City with his
family, he became more active in helping and developing churches of
the Lord in that area.
Along
with Daton Palitayan of Solano, Nueva Vizcaya, Felix faced some of
the early preachers and debaters of the locally organized group- the
" Iglesia Ni Cristo, 1914" ( INC, 1914) in public
discussions defending and " contending for the faith," Jude
1:3.
He
was not only a preacher and debater, but was also a voluminous writer
in Pilpino language. A lasting testimony to his journalistic prowess
was " Ano Ang Cristianismo" a translation of "
What Is Christianity?" copyright 1997 and written by Joel
Stepthen Williams, Ph.D.
Felix
became a full time preacher of a congregation in Quezon City but he
continued to help and develop other churches of the Lord through his
informative and inspiring messages.
He
attended a New Life Behavior seminar offered by Hillery Motsinger
along with other preachers and church workers of the National Capital
Region and neighboring provinces.
At
age 75, Felix returned to His maker last December 19, 2011. As
tribute to his contributions to various churches through his
preaching, debates and writings, below are quotations from fellow
Christians:
Edgardo
Maquling ( aka Maq Gary) December 20, 2011" Rest now thy tired
feet, dear soul and, be awake at the dawn's new day! Thy goodness
will always be remembered, not by me alone, not by your friends
alone, but by Him, the One who inspires us to keep on. Our laborsome
ministries will continue, till we all see each other again! So long,
brother!"
RJ
Price ( April 25, 2011) " How are you? It is good to see you
here, (FB) it has been 20 something years or so."
Hillery
M. Motsinger ( August 2, 2009) " Thanks for joining Facebook.
This will be only for those who have graduated from our NLBI seminar
and are certified as either an instructor or trainer." HM

five children as exemplary children of God.
An
alumna of Philippine Bible College, sister Ruby first married the late
evangelist/ preacher Victorino Dumawa. A widow, she raised her five children as
disciples of Christ.

Her
earthly body was laid to rest at the Garden of Peace of Pyramid Memorial Park
after messages were given by Arnan A. Bayla and Erasto Fuentes,Jr.
Solomon's
statement " Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old,
he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6" can be a
fitting epitaph for the beloved sister Rubejes Calosa- Dumawa/ Mc Lean.

On behalf of the Brown Family Matters
Reunion Committee, we would like to extend our deepest and heartfelt
condolence to you, her son Tutu, and the rest of the immediate
family. Another leaf has fallen from our family tree.
Toni’s spirit shall continue to
fertilize our hearts with love. She always displayed Christ like
characteristics, never criticizing but always uplifting and
correcting unacceptable behavior with love. She was quite ambitious,
believing that nothing is impossible if you put your trust in God.
Toni, held the title of Executive
Administrator of Information on the reunion committee. A title that
was “self-appointed†and she performed her duties and
responsibilities with such zeal. It was her utmost desire to ensure
that the family reunion would materialize and that we will all
rekindle the love (and family unity) that our forefathers showed for
one another by breaking bread, playing and praying together.
Mildred, your loss affects all of us,
in different ways, but we can rest assured that her labor was not in
vain. She planted seeds of love in everything she did or said. We
are thankful for the footprints she left in each of our hearts. We
pray as a family for Toni’s sake, that we can learn to forgive and
forget the hurts of the past and move forward to the future in love
because The Brown’s Family tree is getting sparse and unforgiveness
may cause our tree to go barren and die too.
May God continue to comfort each of you
during this time as Toni’s soul rest in perfect peace.
Much Love, BFM Reunion Committee
REMEMBERING PACITA JIMENEZ
Virginia and I received an unexpected news that her cousin Pacita
Jimenez, a retired school principal in Cabilocaan, Calasiao, Pangasinan,
Philippines died last Monday at the age of 76.
Our beloved Sister
Pacita stayed with us in our home in San Francisco, California for several
years before she returned to the Philippines for good.
As a retired school
principal, we commend her humility and desire to have WE CARE Gospel
presentation with us. Her openness and interest to know the BIBLE (Basic Instructions
Before Leaving Earth)
is worthy of emulation.
Unfortunately, several
of her co-teachers who are living here in San Francisco Bay Area and those
living in Calasiao, Pangasinan, Philippines, refused our invitations to have WE
CARE gospel presentations with them. In fact, one of her co-teachers residing
in the North Bay refused our invitation for WE CARE Gospel presentation. She
died ahead of our Sister Pacita last month due to cancer without knowing, understanding
and obeying the gospel in baptism for the forgiveness of sins (read Romans
1:16, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9, Acts 2: 38).
During our series of WE
CARE gospel presentations, Sister Pacita understood that Jesus is the Christ the
Son of the Living God (read Matthew
16:18, NKJV); that Jesus is 100% God and 100% man (read John 1:1, John 1:14, NKJV); and that
Jesus is the only true Mediator between God and man (read 1 Timothy 2:5, NKJV).
Sister Pacita fully
understood that the gospel is the power of God to salvation. Romans 1:16, NKJV says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of
Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for
the Jew first and also for the Greek (or Gentiles).â€
She also fully understood
the historical facts of the gospel (DBR or Death,
Burial and Resurrection of Jesus Christ). 1
Corinthians 15:1-4, NKJV reads, “I
declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and
in which you stand by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word
which I preached to you --- unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you
first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins
according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the
third day according to the Scriptures.â€
Sister Pacita fully
understood the urgency of obeying the gospel for the forgiveness of her sins. Acts 22:16, NKJC, says, “And now why are you waiting? Arise and
be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.â€
She also understood the
danger and eternal damnation of those who do not know God and refuse to obey
the gospel in baptism. 2 Thessalonians
1:7-9, NKJV, reads, “You who are
troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His
mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God
and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall
be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from
the glory of His power.â€
On June 16, 2016, Sister
Pacita decided to obey the gospel in baptism for the forgiveness of her sins;
and received the gift of the Holy Spirit (read Acts 2:38, NKJV). Because we didn’t have hot water at the
Golden Gate Church of Christ baptistery, she was baptized by our nephew
Nathaniel Jimenez Tuliao at the baptistery of the Lake Merced Church of Christ
in San Francisco, California. The angels in heaven rejoiced with us (Bro.
Marcus Dancer, Bro. Terry Denis, Virginia and I) who witnessed the
baptism.
Through the years,
Sister Pacita had been a faithful Christian woman. She attended Bible classes
and worship services with us at the Golden Gate Church of Christ in San
Francisco. When we were in Calasiao, she attended the worship services with us
at the Calasiao Church of Christ in Cabilocaan, Calasiao, Pangasinan,
Philippines despite her physical condition and difficulty in walking.
YES, Sister Pacita remained faithful until death (Rev. 2:10). We shall see you in heaven, Sister Pacita.

Nueva Ecija preacher joins His Maker
Reynaldo Cabiles, 69
joined His maker last September 13 as he succumbed to a lingering illness.
Cabiles, a distant relative of the late Daton
Palitayan, also a preacher and debater of the Lord's church in Nueva Vizcaya,
was active in helping congregations in Palayan City, Cabanatuan City, Laur and
Peñaranda, all in Nueva Ecija.
Though a carpenter by occupation, the late
brother used his bible knowledge, obtained from Philippine Bible College in
Solano, Nueva Vizcaya, to good use.
In some ways, Rey Cabiles could be compared to
Apostle Paul who supported himself as he preached the gospel of Christ.
Leaders and members of the Lord's church
in Nueva Ecija said their good byes to brother Rey Cabiles as they witnessed
his "physical body turned to ashes." DAO
Church Profile: History of the Pinatubo Congregation by Tomas Lizardo
In 1991, the gigantic
Pinatubo Volcano erupted- destroying lives and properties.
The people of Cabangan ran and sought refuge
at the mountain top of Dolores, Cabangan, Zambales.
The presence of these refugees moved me to
share the gospel of our Lord to them. As a result, ten precious souls were
baptized into Christ forming the nucleus of the Pinatubo congregation which was
later registered with the Securities and Exchange Commision.
After Pinatubo " subsided," those
who had properties and houses went back to where they came from. Those who had
" nothing" stayed at the mountain top of Dolores until these days.
They multiplied and built shanties there -
forming a new community. Most of these brethren are part of the so called
" indigenous peoples" who have no formal education. There are also
women who are widows and separated from their husbands.
To survive, these skilled brethren go to the
mountains and rivers to hunt wild animals and catch fish, shrimps and frogs
which shall be sold later.
The rich landowners of that place will hire
them to clean the paddies, plant rice and then harvest the "palay"
later.
Now, as the pandemic goes on with its
continuous lockdowns and health protocols, gone are those days of "
plenty" so to speak.
As the " exotic" animals are
"quarantined," these brethren are not able to hunt them down. Needing
work and food, the town mayor and the " barangay" officials help them
to survive. The local church of Christ also gives her "small" share
in helping these needy people.
Brethren, please, join us in teaching these
disciples of Christ into spiritual maturity that the Pinatubo congregation will
become a truly indigenous church- self- governing, self- supporting and self-
propagating.
(Tomas Lizardo, fondly called Tommy,
hails from Bontoc,Mountain Province, Cordillera Administrative Region. He
graduated from Philippine Bible College in Baguio City and studied at East Tennessee
School of Preaching and Missions. He is married to the former Diana Maquiling
of Alangilan, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental)
The congregation is known as: Church of Christ Tagbilaran - Bohol ministries Inc.
In
early 1998, the so called MOSES (Mobile Outreach School of Evangelism and
Shepherding) by: Bro. Reuben Emperado, Bro. Richard Emperado, Bro. Jeter
Sameon, Bro. Vicente Tautuan, and Bro. Marvin Whitt as original organizers
offered a working evangelism forces to help Tagbilaran City for a new work in
coordination with my family. Beforehand, we were joining an already existing
congregation in the city.
The MOSES evangelism volunteers stayed in
our house, accommodating about thirty people. Some checked-in the hotel. A
month later of evangelism, the MARCH for Christ of Bro. Chito Cusi took part of
the new work conducting a medical mission for Five days (from Monday to Friday)
with the assistance of the MOSES team.
The new congregation of small group of Christians
started the assembly in our house. Later on, we moved to Tagbilaran warp in the
commercial building of the Cusi family, for free. Then, about a year time, we
moved backed to our house for a vital reason.
Bro. Ruel Cahulogan, my brother-in-law and
close relative of Bro. Pol, resigned from his bank employment in Manila. He
went back to Bohol and proceed to PIBS (Bible School) of Bro. Reuben in Cebu
City. Two PIBS students, Bro. Junven and Bro. Ruel were sent to work with me
having no problems with their financial support.
The congregation moved again to a popular
J.A. Clarin St. of Tagbilaran City in the whole second floor of the building
rented by the US brethren thru the PIBS. The support of Bro. Ruel was cut off
when he was accepted in the legal office of the Alturas Group of Companies as
investigator.
In the year 2006, Bro. Reuben pulled out
the support of the work – for the preacher and for the rentals. So, Bro. Ruel
and I worked together devoting on Sunday works and preaching as I continued
with my family in bakery peddling business. Along that time, we worked so much
to purchase our church lot, and built a church building. The property is very
close to the city in the adjacent barangay of Dauis town, a Three minute drive
from the heart of the city. This property is still in my name for originally it
was untitled, and we did not risk to transfer it into the name of the
congregation, after our SEC registration was found questionable – no annual
reports, costing a great amount of penalty.
A missionary, Bro. Michael Stock with his
Filipina wife of Southern Leyte joined our congregation. He hired a preacher –
Bro. Chin Montoyo, and supported him for this congregation. Then, bro. Stock
left us when he resumed the other congregation that has no preacher for many
years - this was due to the death of the said preacher. (This preacher was
supported by someone who believes the literal kingdom of Christ on earth which
will be established in His coming). We assumed the financial obligations of
bro. Chin after his support was cut off, while he was still in our
congregation. Later on, Bro. Chin left us also when he accepted the job, as one
of the teaching staffs for Cebu Bible College. So, again we worked together
with Bro. Ruel as Sunday preachers until he (Ruel) left also for his home town
of Guindulman to the KALAHI of DSWD as a director in the area for his better
employment opportunity. He is now preaching in the old Bantig Church of Christ
which was started in the 1970’s at that town. Commendably, Bro. Ruel had
contributed more developments and progress by his leadership skill in this
work. He organized the annual Bohol Summer Youth Camp, until 2019 of the
pandemic.
The congregation records 65 individuals in
the membership. Presently, the work is smoothly moving by our pulpit and
preaching association with Bro. Nathan Arellano, a son of Bro. Fred from PBC,
and the husband of our daughter – Debora (RN). He graduated from Cebu Bible
College, after holding a secular college degree. We considered him as a church
minister being supported by the congregation and both chose to stay in the
church premises. Bro. John Felix Aranas, an engine cadet seaman and Bro. Nathan
serve as song leaders; being Sunday worship organizers. Our daughters, Sis.
Phoebe Aranas, a public high school teacher, and Sis. Debora serve as Sunday
school teachers with their own assigned assistants during Sundays, before the
pandemic.
During this pandemic, we are only holding
25 to 30 individuals for an hour in our Sunday church services. Previously, we
used to have two assemblies on Sundays; and we did not encourage the church to
bring kid/s in the assembly for the mean time. Some are used to assemble in
their own houses for on-line worship.

Remembering Juanita Robertson
Juanita Robertson, 88 years old, a
retired professor of City College in San Francisco, California joined
her Maker last June 26, 2021 at her home after battling lung cancer
for some months.
Sister Juanita, a long time member of
Golden Gate church of Christ, is remembered for having been an
encouragement "exemplifying faith amidst trials, burdens and
illness."
Church members James Quitoriano, Art
and Virgie J. Madlaing, and Terry Denis often visited her on Sundays
for fellowship and communion. In response, she would delight them
with songs she composed and comforting testimonies of God's words to
her life.
Months before she joined her Maker
due to complications from COPD, sister Virgie J. Madlaing would
stay in her home and at times remained there overnight to attend to
her needs.
Several weeks before the doctors said
that sister Juanita had only three weeks to live, her daughters
Dawne and Deena took care of her until she finally rested with the
Lord.

Brief History of the Midtown church of Christ
Midtown Church of Christ > Brief History of the Midtown church of Christ
The Midtown church had her humble beginning in 1983 when brother
Felix A. Bravo and his family, members of the Baguio Church of Christ,
18 Rimando Road, started a new work in the heart of Baguio City.
This congregation, just like her sister congregations, upholds that
they belong to the Lord’s church which was established in Jerusalem in
at the beginning of the first century as recorded in Chapter Two of the
Book of Acts of the Apostles of the New Testament Scriptures. Their
faith or beliefs are solely anchored on the Holy Scriptures as they
pursue and follow the doctrines and practices of the early church based
on the New Testament. They speak only where the Bible speaks, and are
silent in matters where the Bible is silent. They do not embrace any
human creed or dogma but sticks to the Lord’s teachings only. This led
to the preaching of the pure gospel of Jesus Christ that resulted in the
formation of this congregation.
Meeting at the Conference Hall of YMCA along Upper Session Road,
Midtown church of Christ started with but a handful of faithful
Christians, namely, brethren Felix A, Bravo and family, Santiago B.
Sameon and family, Simeon S. Reyes and family, Daniel A. Oliva and
family, Paulino Abubo and some Philippine Bible College students.
After about a year of existence, the Midtown Church of Christ moved on
the third floor of the Puso Ng Baguio Building, Session Road, when
brother David Allen Stathopulo, a missionary from the Saturn Road Church
of Christ, Mesquite, Texas, USA, came and started the Bible Study
Center.
To be precise, the Midtown congregation began on October 16, 1983,
with nine members and some PBC (Philippine Bible College) students. The
congregation has grown to a membership of eighty and had an average
attendance of hundred on Sunday assemblies. Later, in 1983 and 1984,
thirty-four people were baptized; more than a hundred people have been
converted in 1985. A strong evangelism and edification programs were
pursued by the Midtown Church of Christ in the succeeding years and
numerous conversions were effected resulting in her intensive and
extensive growth.
Full – time church workers then helping in teaching students were
Ruth L. Glori, Janice Reyes, Felix Bravo, Danny Oliva, David and Sandy
Stathopulo, Dodoy Sameon, the late Simeon Reyes, Jr. and his wife Phoebe
Sameon-Reyes. Later, two American missionaries came to help in the work
at the Midtown Church of Christ, namely, spouses Eddie and Sherry
Poblete and family and spouses Doug and Sandy Holcomb. Sisters Janice
Reyes, Vickie Hombrebueno and Jeanette Fetalino served as secretaries of
the Bible Study Center, an evangelistic tool of the congregation. The
Midtown congregation has since then employed full-time evangelist and
ministers, namely, brothers Arnan A. Bayla (1986 – present), Felix L.
Olidan Jr. (1988 – 2008), and Andres E. Bestre (1994-present).
The Midtown Church of Christ was registered as a Non-stock,
Non-profit Religious organization with the Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC) with Registration No. BN092-000390 on September 18,
1992.
As more members were added to the congregation, Midtown church moved
to the top floor of Maharlika Livelihood Center. Later on to Baguio
Patriotic High School gymnasium, then to the University of Baguio Little
Theater (Dap-ayan), UB Education building, Baguio-Benguet Community
Credit Cooperative Conference Hall, and at the Bible Study Center
operated by brother Sotero B. Denis at the Third Floor, Dangwa Terminal
Building. Having rented two suite units at the Puso Ng Baguio Building
along Session Road, the congregation assembled there for a number of
years. But owing to the high rate of rentals after the 1990 killer
earthquake, Midtown church leaders decided to hold office and conduct
its worship assemblies at the facilities of the Marlett’s Building
located at Km. 4 Marcos Highway, Baguio City in October 1993. This is
now its permanent location and physical address.
Presently, the Midtown Church of Christ has more than five hundred on
its membership roll. It has expanded outreach ministries which
includes the planting of the Word resulting to the formation of
congregations in Cabanatuan City of Nueva Ecija, Barangays Poblacion,
Penged, and Pito of Bokod, Benguet, and Barangay Nangalisan of Tuba,
Benguet. Ω
